Periodontal Treatment

We pride ourselves in helping you develop positive long term oral health habits to ensure oral health is maintained throughout your life. From time to time your dentist may require some additional specialist support from a Periodontist.

A Periodontist is a dentist who specialises in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal (gum) disease and the treatment of oral inflammation. Our Patient-focused team understands that if you are referred to a Periodontist this can be a very worrying time as the word gum disease and its association with tooth loss can be frightening.

The first thing we assure our patients is that periodontal disease is widespread – in fact, it is the most common disease in humankind. Although traditionally associated with not looking after your teeth we now know this is neither fair or accurate. Many factors are at play, including a number that are uncontrollable. The disease is no respect for age or profession.

Periodontal

Periodontal disease is a disease that destroys the supporting tissues of the tooth. As the tooth support is broken down more and more, the tooth begins to get loose and eventually the tooth is lost, either because it gets very painful to bite on and is extracted, or in very severe situations it can fall out. Periodontal Disease can be caused by many factors. The most likely causes are:

  •  Genetic factors such as size and shape of roots, size and shape of upper and lower jaws and how the upper and lower relate to each other (some help with this relationship can be achieved with bite adjustment known as an occlusal adjustment).
  •  Immune factors – This is where the body does not identify its tissue and breaks it down something like rheumatoid arthritis (there may also be a genetic factor here).
  •  Genetic factors (many unknown) that predispose a person to the disease.

Our Periodontist will diagnose and treat active periodontal disease and monitor areas of concern over the long-term. Home oral hygiene are also acutely important and we will design a bespoke oral healthcare plan for you. There will be a period of getting used to a new home oral routine but you will adapt quickly.

We are here to support you throughout your journey and give you practical advice and support in developing the correct long term oral health habits to ensure oral health is maintained.
