Crowns and Bridges

Missing and badly damaged teeth used to be a lifelong problem. Now natural-looking porcelain crowns and bridges can be a replacement option for all. At Pembroke Dental we can expertly restore damaged teeth and fill gaps with permanent, beautiful replacement ceramic teeth.

When a tooth begins to decay, a filling is usually the first course of action. If there is a large area of decay, a tooth is substantially damaged, or if large fillings have to be repeatedly replaced, a crown is often the best option to adequately support and protect the damaged tooth. However, if the tooth cannot be saved, we can offer a bridge as a replacement option, where a custom-made tooth is attached to the surrounding teeth.

A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is perfectly matched to your mouth in terms of size and colour. It is placed over the tooth for protection and strength, retaining your original tooth underneath.

Crowns can also be used to correct minor cosmetic problems such as irregular spacing, gaps or discolouration. If you are considering a crown, your dentist will take the time to explain the process and answer any questions you may have. If you go ahead, you will need appointments to prepare the tooth and take digital scans for your new crown, and to have your crown fitted. With our new digital lab, this can all take place in one day.

If a tooth cannot be saved, or if a patient has experienced tooth loss for other reasons, a bridge can offer an excellent solution.

It is necessary to have healthy teeth on either side of the gap, as they will support the new bridge. Once you have had a chance to discuss the treatment and make an informed decision, your dentist will prepare your teeth and take the necessary scans.

The teeth either side of the gap will both be crowned, or capped and your new tooth will be attached to these crowns. It will be perfectly matched to your mouth in size, shape, colour, and permanently bonded in place. For both crowns and bridges, it is essential to maintain the best possible oral health long term, so we would recommend regular follow up hygiene therapy treatments.
